Blindness

The major cause of blindness globally is cataract blindness, Cataract blindness develops at an earlier age in developing countries, often striking people in their early 40s when they need to be at their most economically active to support their families. There are an estimated 16 million cataract blind worldwide with 1.4 million of them in Pakistan of these 70% are estimated to be cataract blind.

Often cataracts develops in both eyes at the same time. The symptoms vary, but include a gradual blurring of vision, halos around lights, glare and double vision. The very worst cataracts - where the iris appears almost entirely clouded over - can cause a total loss of vision. Though Removing cataract (the clouding of the eye's lens) is a relatively simple surgical procedure. It is common and easily accessible in developed countries. But in NWFP and FATA, many people with cataracts are yet to benefit mainly because of poverty, lack of facilities and knowledge. In order to play its due role to fight blindness in NWFP & Adjoining tribal areas of FATA, Leprosy, TB and Blindness welfare association through its free eye camps performs cataract surgeries of the deserving patients. Till date Leprosy, TB and Blindness welfare association has performed 281 cataract surgeries (free of cost) and is also raising funds for a mobile operation theatre which would enable the organization to serve the target group in a far better manner.
