Treating Tuberculosis with special emphasis on MDR & XDR

Eight million new cases of tuberculosis are estimated to occur annually and there are an estimated two million deaths from tuberculosis annually. Overall, one third of the world’s population is currently infected with the tuberculosis bacillus. According to the World Health Statistics 2006 published by WHO Pakistan has a staggering TB prevalence rate of 329 persons per 100,000 population, while the incidence rate is 181 persons per 100,000 population. The detection rate under DOTS is 27% with a success rate of 75%. Almost no facilities are available for the treatment of patients suffering from MDR (multi drug resistance) while any facility for XDR is a far cry. According to data collected by Leprosy, Tuberculosis & Blindness Relief Association of Pakistan district Peshawar has around 150 cases of MDR among the poor patients who cannot even afford to purchase a single dose of common antibiotics. All the MDR patients are required to be hospitalized for a minimum of six months or till their sputum tests gives a negative result for TB. In this regard Leprosy, Tuberculosis & Blindness Relief Association of Pakistan is working on the establishment of a separate unit for these patients, as they cannot be accommodated in a general ward. Till the establishment of this unit Leprosy, Tuberculosis & Blindness Relief Association of Pakistan  will continue to provide free regular check-ups along with free medication to the deserving patients.
